Budgeting Climate funding
A visual snapshot of global funding in climate change

The Paris UNFCCC Climate Change Conference in December 2015 brought together 195 nations to adopt the landmark Paris Agreement, aimed at limiting global temperature increases to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to restrict the rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, the absence of a transparent tool to track climate funding investments complicated global negotiations.
During the conference, the need for such a tool became evident. On December 1, 2015, UNFCCC delegates shared a conceptual sketch with the Howoco team, illustrating how a climate funding website could function. The challenge was clear: the platform needed to be operational and populated with relevant data before the conference concluded.

We embraced the challenge and had just three days to design, build, and launch a website that would present global climate funding in an accessible format before the conference concluded.
That evening, we began the design process while simultaneously developing data load scripts to create a functional database. For the front end, we built a dynamic interface that positioned elements on axes to visually represent funding amounts over time. Each element was enriched with additional details, such as currency, links, and other relevant information.
By Friday, 4th December, the beta version of the site was launched. The following day, Saturday, 5th December, it was demonstrated to members of the host French delegation.
